About GFR Calculator

The Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is the best overall index of kidney function. It represents the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney.

This calculator uses validated equations to estimate GFR based on serum creatinine or cystatin C levels, along with demographic information.

For creatinine-based calculation, we use the CKD-EPI equation (2021). For cystatin C-based calculation, we use the CKD-EPI cystatin C equation (2012).

Kidney Disease Stages

Stage 1 (GFR ≥ 90)

Normal kidney function but with evidence of kidney damage (e.g., protein in urine).

Stage 2 (GFR 60-89)

Mildly reduced kidney function with evidence of kidney damage.

Stage 3 (GFR 30-59)

Moderate reduction in kidney function. Divided into 3A (45-59) and 3B (30-44).

Stage 4 (GFR 15-29)

Severe reduction in kidney function. Preparation for renal replacement therapy should begin.

Stage 5 (GFR < 15)

Kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation.
